The Unlikely Success of D.O.
Are you a K-drama or K-pop fan? Either way, you should have come across this guy at some point. Doh Kyungsoo, also known as D.O., is an excellent idol who is now a well-known actor. I have very good reasons for saying so. Unlike most idols turned actors, D.O is not a six-footer. So he is not your ideal K-drama boyfriend. And you don’t find him in any romantic oppa type characters either. He's the strangest Kdrama oppa for the most part. Simply because of how well he portrays these peculiar characters is what makes him a great actor.
If you don’t know actor Doh Kyungsoo, let me introduce him. D.O. was born on January 12 in Seoul. He has one brother who is three years older than him. After winning a school level singing competition, D.O. was advised to audition with SM Entertainment. He was selected and became a trainee. In 2012, he was introduced as the 8th member of the Korean-Chinese boy band EXO. EXO was the most famous boy band in K-pop back in the day. Because of his angelic voice, D.O was the main vocalist of the group. When EXO was still a rookie group and rising in popularity, D.O. got hold of some acting gigs. He made his acting debut in the movie "Cart" in 2014. His first small screen appearance was in the 2014 SBS hit drama "It’s Okay, That’s Love. At the APAN Star Awards, D.O. won the Best New Actor award for his very first drama. You should definitely check out D.O’s performance in "Hello Monster" as a psychopath killer. His angelic face, along with his cold gesture, gives goosebumps.
All these acting gigs made D.O. the busiest member of Exo. Movie directors were lined up to cast him. And you should definitely check out these master pieces: "My Annoying Brother and Swing Kids". Most idols turned actors are pretty bad and emotionless when it comes to acting. Actually, the only reason they keep receiving projects is because of their attractive faces. But Doh Kyungsoo is an exception. He never plays the hearth-robbing oppa character. He will come out as a total weirdo with a bald head. And yet he nails his character.
According to Korean law, all men between the ages of 18 and 35 are required to serve in the military. Men can enlist after 18 years of age, but they have time until they are 28 years of age. And usually, idols enlist at the last moment. In the prime of his career, when he was just 26 years old, D.O. joined the military as an active soldier. He was discharged on January, 2021. Since then, he has worked on several projects, but we did not see his face on screen. After four years of silence on the small screen, D.O. is back with another magnificent performance in the KBS legal drama "Bad Prosecutor". Now a legal drama would sound very formal and serious. Don’t forget the lead is D.O. and you can always expect the unexpected. Yet again, we find the weirdest prosecutor that we’ve ever come across in K-Drama land.
Did you start watching ‘Bad Prosecutor’? When the drama was announced, this is what we expected. A neat and tidy, serious-looking, handsome guy in a prosecutor's cloak. But what we’ve got is rather a gangster who literally carries a sword everywhere. He is always clad in a jacket with messy hair that hasn’t had a haircut for months.
‘"Bad Prosecutor" is about Jin Jung, a rookie prosecutor who fights against corrupt and powerful people. Jin Jung doesn’t work by the books. While he creates chaos over chaos to catch culprits and uncover the truth, he puts himself and his supporters in trouble.
The drama premiered on the 5th of October, recording an average nationwide rating of 4.3 percent, taking the No. 1 spot among the Wednesday-Thursday dramas. This start was expected because EXO fans around the world were anticipating the drama. However, maintaining the high rating is what tells us whether the drama is really good or not. Guess what? Half of the series is over, and the ratings are getting better with every episode.
Both Korean and international fans are enjoying the drama. Because of the goofiness of the drama, it has attracted all sorts of viewers. Korean viewers are filling up the discussion board on Naver with support and praise for the new drama. “Jingeom team's chemistry is very good”. “I'm sure next week will be even more fun, so I'm sure it'll go up even more”, “Kyungsoo and the albino acting geniuses haha”, “I'm watching it again from episode 1, but seeing it up to episode 6, it's even more fun”. International fans also share the same view “I am loving the drama and the actors too. This is the first time I get so excited to wait for the next episodes.”, “In my country..this drama aired one day late which means every Thursday and Friday on KBS Channel.. So I need to wait for few hours to watch it online with english subs because I'm so curious and cant even wait to watch this drama a day late”.
Unlike other weekly K-dramas, "Bad Prosecutor" does not run for 16 episodes but just 12. And the viewers are not ready to let it go by just 12 episodes. “Episode 12 It's a pity, it feels like it's over at the moment when you're in the middle of gaining momentum”, “This drama is fun, but why does it end with only 12 episodes?”.
Even though Kyungsoo has a phenomenal voice he has never ever sung drama OSTs. However, we are fortunate to hear him sing for "Bad Prosecutor". The third original sound track of the drama was released this week and it is simply a feast for the ears.
