5 Times Anti-Fans Tried Killing Korean Celebrities
Some of you would even sacrifice your kidney or liver for your bias. That's what hardcore fans feel most of the time. But on the contrary, there are anti-fans who want to take the breath out of celebrities. There’s a thin line between love and hate. And if a diehard fan turns out to be a hater, things can get pretty scary. Not only can hate bring out one’s killer instincts, but love, or rather obsession, does as well. Many a times celebrities had to face near death experience not because of hate but because of obsession. Let’s look at some of the instances where Korean celebrities have had near-death experiences. These are not about the death treats they get almost every day. We mean the real incidents that made celebrities feel as if this was going to be their last moment.
Sometimes the sasaeng fans do not intend to harm the celebrities. But things can go out of control when they cross the line. We all know that Super Junior Heechul had an accident and cannot dance anymore. But way before that, in Singapore, Heechul, together with leader Leeteuk, met with another accident. This was a minor accident, but still, people do not get into accidents willingly, do they? Things could have gone horribly wrong in a mere second, but thankfully, the two idols were not harmed. While the two idols were in Singapore for a show on January 28, 2011, several fans followed them and this led to a racing scenario. The race ended with a collision of 7 cars and 5 cars of fans. Both Leeteuk and Heechul took to Twitter that night. Leeteuk wrote, "This is Singapore. I get the feeling that it is a beautiful place..^^ I like that you are following our car but please be careful. a 7-car rear-end accident. I almost died..??". Heechul was surely pissed when he tweeted, "Now, now, if you want to see us, then come to the stadium?? Everyone is being put in danger. I don't want to be reminded of those past events ever again~". And this was not the first time Super Junior members experienced this situation. We are pretty sure these fans didn’t want anything but to have a close view of the two idols. But if you cross the line, guys, the outcome can be unpredictable.
Seungri of Bigbang also went through the same situation in China. Seungri and his staff were returning after attending an event in Shanghai on December 23, 2013. A van full of Bigbang fans followed them. It was reported that Seungri even rolled down the windows of his car and waved at the fans, asking them to please not chase him. But the fans, or rather we call them sasaengs, followed them and collided with the staff vehicle, and the staff vehicle collided with Seungri’s vehicle. After all, Seungri posted on Twitter, "Last night small accident wasn't anyone's fault. Me? totally fine and thankfully no one got hurt! Please enjoy your holidays and merry XMAS!" That message was ironical because when Chinese police contacted YG regarding charges, YG’s response was, "We asked them to treat the fan leniently." It’s exactly as Seungri said, Last night small accident wasn't anyone's fault. Me?
Most of us do not know of the 71 year old trot singer Na Hoon-a. He is referred to as the "emperor of trot". At least now we know he is a legend. Way back in 1973, the singer was attacked by a broken bottle while he was performing on stage. Na Hoon-a’s left cheek was slashed, and he underwent surgery with 72 stitches, and we can see the scar to date. The assailant in police custody stated the name of another popular trot singer of the time, Namjin. The assailant stated that Namjin instigated the attack. And this false statement back-lashed Namjin. However, after wreaking havoc, the assailant was sent to prison for one year. Investigations revealed that "the assailant was a fan of the late actor Shin Sung-il. On the day of the incident, he prepared a weapon in advance for the purpose of harming Shin Sung-il and making his name known. Then, he fell asleep and missed Shin Sung-il's turn, and at that time, Na Hoon-a was performing. So, Na Hoon-a became the target." Isn't that sickening?
If you are a Kdrama fan, you should have come across Yoon Eun Hye. Remember Go Eun-chan from Coffee Prince? Yes, that’s her. Before becoming one of the most famous actresses, she was an idol. Back in the days when she debuted as an idol from the group Baby Vox, Eun Hye had to face a traumatic experience. In 2000, just after debuting, a male anti-fan squirted a soy sauce, red pepper, and vinegar mixture into her eyes using a water gun. When he was close enough, he brought out his water gun and squirted her while pretending to be giving her a Pikachu plush toy. When this happened, Eun Hye was just 16 years old. Just imagine how traumatic it would have been for her. She was immediately hospitalized. The hospital informed that her cornea was damaged. And she had to perform with an eye patch for months. The real reason behind this incident is not clear, however. H.O.T fans have been continuously pestering Baby Vox.
Finally, we have TVXQ Yunho, who was nearly killed by poisoning back in 2006. When Yunho was taking a break from recording their third album, a lady approached him with an orange juice. Yunho took the orange juice, hoping it was a staff member, and drank it. He then started vomiting and spitting blood, and the staff rushed him to the hospital. Later, it was found that the drink contained superglue. It’s simply as crazy as it sounds. Later, a girl turned in, stating that it was a prank. However, Yunho did not speak of this incident, but the trauma lingered for years. Recently, in a documentary with Super Junior, he opened up about this incident. Recalling the nightmare while the crew was passing through a tunnel, Yunho said, "It reminded me of that trauma because of a similar atmosphere. I felt some familiarity since the color and locations were similar. I felt like I couldn’t breathe since I was swept up by the trauma.
As media outlets report, it seems like almost all Korean celebrities have received death threats. And you might have heard of the unpopular Kim Yeoshin, aka Selja, or the idol killer. There are so many articles about the threats made by her and the horrendous situations caused by her. But Selja sounds like more of a fantasy because there has been no legal action taken against her. According to all the allegations made against Selja, if any of those allegations are true, I don’t think any authority would turn a blind eye. But all we hear are just stories. The 2014 Ladies’ Code car accident that killed two group members is rumored to have been planned by Selja. But the group manager was arrested for exceeding speed limits and causing an accident.
One thing is sure. Either it is Selja or not, all these disasters are caused by irrational obsession. As we always claim, there is a man of flesh and blood inside an idol. What you and I feel is felt by them as well. Let’s respect celebrities not for being stars but for being humans who bring a smile to our faces. With that note, we are ending today’s episode.
